A lot of famous people have made Buenos Aires their home at one time their lives. One of the most famous residents is Aristotle Onassis, shipping tycoon who later married the widow of US President John. F. Kennedy. The famous poet Pablo Neruda also lived in Buenos Aires. Neruda is the pen name of Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, more popularly known as a communist politician. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of the Little Prince, also lived in Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires is a port city with lots of history in it. The coastline, which stretches along Rio de la Plata, has been the gateway of Portenos for centuries. Portenos (the name by which the people of Buenos Aires are known) are kown for their European heritage and this is evident with their love for the opera. In fact, it is the location of Teatro Colon, one of the finest opera houses in world. Among those who have performed in the 3,500-seat theater are Caruso and Maria Callas.

The city does not have a lot of famous structures unlike other European cities that bank on their physical structures to attract tourists. The main selling point of Buenos Aires Argentina is its people and diverse culture. This is not to say that the city lacks the attraction of Victorian houses that dates back to the 19th century.

If you are interested to see a mixture of Spanish, Italian and French architecture and design (which is a testament to the multicultural heritage of Buenos Aires) then go visit the San Telmo District. At the same time, a quick visit to La Boca’s rainbow-colored houses and murals will show you the diversity that exists in the city.

If you are visiting Buenos Aires for the first time make sure you visit during spring or fall as this is the time when tourist arrivals are low and you can enjoy the place to yourself. However, if you want to experience Buenos Aires at its best then time your visit during one of their dance or wine festivals.

You can get to known the real Buenos Aires by retracing the steps taken by Jorge Luis Borges, known as the greatest writer Argentina has ever had. Although blind, Borges walked his way to work daily to Biblioteca Nacional. Like him, you can walk along the Crazy Block and Galerias Pacifico where youc an see the various art exhibits. Café Richmond along Florida is a historical site as this is the meeting place of Borges and other writers.

Plaza de Mayo is also another historical site that you would be passing along the way since it is almost the city center. While in the city center you can also see the Metropolitan Cathedral, the town hall or Cabildo and the Government House.

If you are a fan of Eva Peron then you might want to visit her grave at the Cementario de la Recoleta. After that you can dine at The Recoleta or in one of the restaurants in Pilar. Maximize your visit to the area by going to the Palais de Glace as well as Our Lady of the Pilar Church as these places are nearby.

Museo Historico Nacional reveals the turbulent history of Argentina and is the venue of Candido Lopez’ paintings. Lopez is one of the most important artists in Argentina. If you want to rest while sight-seeing then visit the Parque Lezama and relax amid its greeneries. There is one site that is an attraction for those who are curious about Russia’s influence in the city and this is he Russian-owned Catedral Russo Ortodoxo.
